Scripture

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
— Ephesians 4:32

Encouragement

One of the beautiful truths about Scripture is that God rarely asks us to do something without first reminding us what He has already done for us.

Paul’s command in Ephesians 4:32 isn’t simply to “be nice.” He roots kindness in the incredible reality of God’s forgiveness through Christ. We forgive because we’ve been forgiven. We extend compassion because we’ve received compassion. We choose grace because grace has changed us.

Vivian Bricker’s story reminds us how easily outside influences can shape our attitudes. As children, the desire to fit in often keeps us silent when we should speak up. As adults, the pressures simply change. We may feel tempted to join negative conversations at work, respond harshly on social media, or withhold kindness from someone who has hurt us.

Yet followers of Jesus are called to something different.

Kindness isn’t weakness. It isn’t pretending that wrong actions don’t matter. Biblical kindness is strength under the control of the Holy Spirit. It speaks truth with love. It stands up for others. It refuses to return hurt for hurt.

Summer provides countless opportunities to practice this kind of intentional kindness. Perhaps it’s encouraging the coworker who seems discouraged, checking on an elderly neighbor during the heat, inviting someone who feels lonely to share a meal, or choosing patience with your own family when schedules become hectic.

These moments may seem small, but God often works through ordinary acts of faithfulness to accomplish extraordinary things.

Kindness also begins within our own hearts. If we’re carrying bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness, those hidden struggles eventually influence how we treat others. That’s why Paul links kindness with forgiveness. Releasing someone into God’s hands doesn’t excuse what happened—it frees us from allowing that hurt to control our lives.

As believers, we are new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). We don’t have to respond the way we once did. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live differently.

Today, ask yourself:

  • Who needs encouragement from me?
  • Where have I allowed frustration to replace compassion?
  • Is there someone I need to forgive?
  • How can I intentionally reflect Christ’s kindness today?

Even one small act of kindness can become an answer to someone else’s prayer.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for showing me perfect kindness through Jesus Christ. Even when I was undeserving, You extended grace, mercy, and unconditional love to me.

As I enter this summer season, shape my heart to look more like Yours. Help me choose compassion over criticism, patience over frustration, and forgiveness over bitterness. Let my words encourage rather than wound, and let my actions reflect the kindness You have shown me.

Open my eyes to people who need hope today. Give me courage to stand up for those who are hurting, wisdom to know when to speak, and humility to serve without expecting recognition.

Where unforgiveness still lingers in my heart, help me release it to You. Remind me that forgiveness is an act of trust, placing justice into Your loving hands rather than carrying it myself.

May every conversation, every interaction, and every opportunity this summer become a chance to point someone toward Christ through simple acts of kindness.

Use my life to reflect Your goodness.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
