Embrace a Healthier You: How Faith and Self-Care Transformed My Life

It happened on a morning like any other amid the chaos of kids’ schedules and a never-ending to-do list. Catching my reflection in the mirror, the sight of my exhausted, overwhelmed self was a wake-up call. I hardly recognized the tired eyes staring back at me. 

Embrace a Healthier You: How Faith and Self-Care Transformed My Life

I definitely didn’t feel at home in my large, sluggish body. I needed to make a change. I could no longer ignore the struggle of trying to keep up with my family on vacation or asking my daughter if we could just hang out in the wave pool instead of climbing the waterslides. Change had to happen—not just for my well-being but for my family, too. Here’s the steps I took:

1. Understanding the Need for Self-Care

For too long, I placed everyone else’s needs above mine, thinking that’s what a devoted mom and wife did. The cost was high—poor diet, no exercise, and a toll on my mental and physical health. It was my battle with high blood pressure and other alarming symptoms that alerted me to the problem. And the reflection in the mirror took me over the edge.

 

2. Seeking Help and Embracing Change

Feeling utterly depleted, I turned to a friend who was a health coach. Amber’s insights proved to be a lifeline. She showed me that small adjustments could bring about big changes. This journey became about regaining physical health and spiritual renewal. It continued to be a reminder of God’s care through the kindness of friends.

 

3. Turning a New Leaf: Accountability

In order to be accountable—and my desire to help others find health and freedom—I trained to become a health coach. This new role wasn’t a career change. It was an added responsibility that breathed life into me as I committed to my health and helping others achieve theirs. Coaching has been a beautiful way for my struggles to grow into strengths that uplift others.

 

4. Incorporating Faith in My Journey

My health journey has flourished through prayer and reading scripture. God designed me for a purpose and He longs for me to draw near to Him to receive strength in all things. I could not do this along, and thankfully I don’t have to. God is by my side.

 

5. Inviting Others to Join Me 

If you face similar challenges, remember that all monumental changes start with small steps. Starting small is okay as long as you start somewhere. Opt for a nutritious snack, enjoy a brief walk, or take time for prayer and meditating on God’s Word—each little victory paves the way for better health. So, are you ready to join me?

This journey of self-care taught me that nurturing oneself is crucial to living fully. It’s not solely about extending our years but enriching the quality of every day we’re given. By caring for ourselves, we can better serve those around us.
