Fall is coming! As we look forward to the leaves turning their vibrant colors and the days growing shorter, it’s easy to feel a sense of anticipation. While the cooler weather (unless you live here in Arkansas!) might make us spend more time indoors, it doesn’t mean we have to settle for boredom. If you’re like me, you’re always on the lookout for ways to make the most of these cozy, stay-at-home days with your kids—especially without breaking the bank! Here are 10 fun, simple, and cost-effective fall activities that can engage children of all ages.

10 Fun and Simple Fall Activities to Do with Your Kids (on a Budget!)

1. Host a Mini Fall Carnival

Transform your living room or backyard into a carnival! Set up simple games like a ring toss with paper plates, a bean bag toss with socks, or a balloon dart game (using a cardboard box and tape). Have the kids create their own booths, and take turns running each one. Bonus: offer tickets or “prizes” like stickers or small treats for extra fun!

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Fall is the perfect time to explore nature. Go on a walk around your neighborhood or local park, and create a list of things to find: red leaves, acorns, pinecones, or even a bird’s nest. For older kids, you can add a challenge by timing the hunt or asking them to take pictures of what they find.

3. Storytime with a Twist

Storytelling can be even more special in the fall. Create a cozy reading corner with blankets and pillows. Instead of reading from a book, take turns making up a story, one sentence at a time. You’ll be amazed at how silly and creative things can get! For older kids, challenge them to incorporate fall themes like pumpkins, squirrels, or a blustery day. You could even take it a step further and have your kids write their own fall-themed story. Check out these fun fall writing prompts!

4. Bake Fall-Themed Treats

Baking is a great way to engage your kids in the kitchen. Keep it simple by making fall favorites like apple muffins or pumpkin spice cookies, or if you’re feeling adventurous, try a new recipe! For younger kids, let them help with the stirring or decorating, while older kids can read the recipe and measure ingredients. Bonus: share the treats with neighbors as a way to spread some autumn cheer!

5. Create a Leaf Art Gallery

Collect leaves of different shapes and sizes and use them as stamps. Dip them into paint and press them onto paper to create beautiful fall artwork. For an added challenge, ask your kids to turn their leaf prints into animals or people by drawing faces or legs. Display their masterpieces on the fridge or in a special “art gallery” at home.

6. Build a Blanket Fort and Tell Bible Stories

Grab some blankets and chairs and build an epic fort! Once inside, bring out your Bible and re-tell favorite Bible stories, but with a fun twist—imagine you and your children were actually there! How would it feel to be Jonah in the whale, or David facing Goliath? Add sensory details and ask your kids to chime in with their thoughts. It’s an excellent way to make Bible stories come to life!

7. Play Fall-Themed Charades

Nothing gets the giggles going like a good game of charades. Write down fall-related ideas (raking leaves, drinking hot cocoa, picking apples, etc.) on slips of paper and let your kids act them out. Even your youngest ones will love trying to act like a squirrel gathering nuts, while older kids will enjoy getting creative with harder concepts.

8. Leaf Pile Jumping

If you have a yard full of fallen leaves, put them to good use! Rake them into a huge pile and let your kids jump, toss, and bury themselves in the leaves. It’s an old-fashioned but always satisfying activity that will leave your kids tired and smiling. Don’t forget to grab your camera—these are the moments you’ll want to remember!

9. Create a DIY Fall Wreath

Get crafty by making your own fall wreath. Use items you find outdoors, such as twigs, leaves, and pinecones, and glue them to a paper plate or cardboard ring. Let your kids decorate their wreath with ribbons, paint, or even small drawings of fall symbols like pumpkins and acorns. Hang it on your front door to show off your family’s creativity.

10. Start a “Gratitude Tree”

As Thanksgiving approaches, take time as a family to reflect on all that you’re thankful for. Find a branch and place it in a jar or vase to serve as your “tree.” Every day, have each family member write down one thing they’re thankful for on a paper leaf and hang it on the tree. By the time Thanksgiving arrives, you’ll have a beautiful reminder of God’s blessings.

These activities are not only fun but also a wonderful way to make memories with your kids. And the best part? They’re budget-friendly and simple enough to pull off, even on a busy homeschool day. What are some of your favorite fall activities? Leave a comment below and let’s inspire each other!
