How To Become a Lifelong Learner

Every day, we have a choice: to take a step to follow a dream or to stay stagnant and continue on as things are. The greatest wealth we can possess is the knowledge and wisdom gained through a lifetime of learning. I’ve grown and changed because I hadn’t been afraid to learn.
The wisest man who ever lived once said, “Do yourself a favor and learn all you can; then remember what you learn, and you will prosper” (Prov. 19:8 GNT). He knew that true prosperity comes not from gold or jewels but from the wisdom and understanding we acquire.
Embracing a Lifelong Journey of Learning
Here are five simple steps to becoming a lifelong learner and amassing a wealth of knowledge that will enrich your life and the lives of those around you.
1. Discover Your Purpose
Did you know your passions and joys can lead you to your purpose? It’s true! Think about what things you enjoy doing. List things that take your time and energy but don’t seem like work. When you’re doing what you were created to do, it doesn’t feel like work at all.
For a season, I enjoyed being creative and making teddy bears, but when I first started pursuing writing, I knew I was made for this. I find joy even in the middle of the struggle. I always want to know more and do better. Work doesn’t seem like work (most of the time) when you’re fulfilling your purpose.
2. Understand How You Learn
Knowledge sticks when absorbed in a way that resonates with your learning style. I learn best with books and papers piled around me. I usually have to write down my thoughts to process them.
When I read a book, I underline. When I attend conferences, I take pages of notes, and that’s just me. Figure out how you learn best and use your preferences to your advantage. Experiment with different methods until you find what works best for you.
3. The Power of Listening
Keep your ears open and your heart receptive to the lessons others can teach you.
I’ve learned so much from listening to others. Sometimes the greatest teacher is the person right in front of you.
I build relationships with people I respect and want to learn from. I read blogs written by people I respect. I pay attention to those around me in everyday life. Everyone has a story to tell and wisdom to impart.
4. Embrace the Unknown
Courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to act despite it. I try new recipes and visit new places. I watch how-to videos and then try it myself.
Growth happens just outside your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to try something new, even if you’re not sure you’ll be good at it. The only way to learn is by doing.
5. Pass It On
Knowledge is meant to be shared, not hoarded. The best way to incorporate your knowledge is to teach it. Teaching solidifies learning and multiplies impact. As a mom, you have a willing student in your child.
Involve your child in whatever you’re learning. If you’re cooking, let your little one watch you. Your child should know the things that interest you. By teaching others, you not only reinforce your own understanding but also invest in the lives of those you love.
A Legacy of Learning
The greatest investment you can make is in your own mind and heart. Learning can take you far—you must be brave and start! Once you start learning and growing, your life will never be the same. Even better, you can pass on this legacy. I love how this poem puts it:
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be—
I had a mother who read to me.
— Strickland Gillian (1849 – 1954)
Your child’s life will never be the same as he or she learns to follow in your footsteps! The wealth of knowledge you amass will be a legacy that enriches your life and the lives of generations to come. So why wait? Take that first step today and start your journey of lifelong learning.
